Assignment 1: The bowl, torus, tray and blister.

Week one:
  • No class.
Week two:
  • Fab Lab design induction. Bowl not started.
Week three:
  • Workshop induction during class. Started development of bowl, very rough, ran out of time, progress minimal.
  • Headed to studio Thursday afternoon to catch up. Not many people there, free access to all tools. Ended up smoothing out the bowl and giving it some depth. Then went on to overwork the base, thickness of metal drastically reduced and split. Messed up bowl floating around the studio, will look to grab a photo next week.
  • Edit: Found bowl: photo of split below, as you can see the damage in the centre.
  • Found a scrap piece of metal, started again, looked much better however slightly smaller, therefore smaller bowl as a result.
  • Created the outer rim first, smoothed the edges and then started to deepen the middle using the timber shape and the sand bag. I took more time and care this time around, slowly developing the shape to not overly distort and stress the metal. Continued this for around an hour till it looked pretty good (see second photo).
  • Bowl was now ready for English Wheel. Very basic process, just very repetitive to get perfection, can be hard with only only one English Wheel in the studio. Continued this process for a while till I got kicked out of the studio for an induction for some other class. No more time, will finish it next week (hopefully).
  • Finished product, a few minor imperfections. Video below to demonstrate spherical nature and dimensions.
